Balayage vs Highlights: Which Is Right for Your Hair?

What are traditional highlights?

Traditional highlights are applied with foils, from close to the root through to the ends, in a uniform pattern. The result is a brighter, more evenly lightened look with a noticeable lift all over. Because the colour starts near the root, regrowth shows sooner. Most clients refresh foil highlights every 6–8 weeks.

What is balayage?

Balayage is a freehand technique: the colour is literally painted onto the surface of the hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. The result is softer and more natural: sun-kissed dimension with no harsh lines, designed to grow out gracefully over 3–4 months rather than weeks.

Because placement is bespoke to your cut, face shape and how your hair falls, no two balayage results are the same. That's also why it's worth choosing a balayage specialist rather than booking it as an add-on service.

Which one suits you?
